Olá, I’m Bernardo
I’m an environmentalist and photographer whose work is grounded on the interconnections of photography, multiculturalism, and social-environmental justice.
My journey into the world of environmentalism was set into motion at an early age when I discovered my love for the outdoors through climbing in my beautiful home state Minas Gerais in Brazil. This passion blossomed into an Environmental Law degree, and later into a Master’s in ‘Human Ecology and Contemporary Social Issues’ in which I proposed an emancipatory model of environmental education rooted on the pedagogy of Paulo Freire.
My quest to understand the intrinsic complexities and intersectionalities of the climate crisis - as well as my eagerness to help find solutions - has taken me around the globe. From South Africa, where I unearthed my love for the art of photography, to Southeast Asia, where I partnered with local and international organizations across a variety of humanitarian and ecological issues.
Inspired by the book ‘Las Venas Abiertas de America Latina’ (Eduardo Galeano), I spent the first half of 2016 riding a bicycle through Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
In 2019, I found a home with Patagonia, where I help manage its lifestyle photography archive. I served as a Leadership & Advocacy Coordinator within our BIPOC Community in 2022-23, and I am a member of Patagonia’s JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) Environmental Grants Council.
Today, I am based on the ancestral homeland of the Chumash people in present-day Ventura, California.
Thanks for stopping by, let’s connect!
With gratitude,
